These 65 historic sites that tell the stories of N.J. could get $15.8M in state grants
Sixty-five historical sites and nonprofits throughout New Jersey could soon receive grants of up to $750,000 each to help preserve, support and promote their initiatives.
Nearly $15.8 million in grant recommendations were approved last month by the New Jersey Historic Trust, an affiliate of the state Department of Community Affairs. The list still needs to be approved by the Garden State Preservation Trust board in November.
Then, the money is slated to get inal approval from the state Legislature and Gov. Phil Murphy before it is allocated to historic sites, municipalities and nonprofits throughout the state.
Prominent Jersey landmarks, including the Great Falls in Paterson, Lucy the Elephant in Margate, the Liberty Hall Museum in Union and the USS New Jersey in Camden, will be among grant recipients. (See a map of the sites and a full list of grants below.)
This round of grant recommendations for preservation planning, heritage tourism, and capital projects will help to preserve historic structures, documents, and artifacts that tell the stories of New Jerseys history to future generations, Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, who serves as the state Department of Community Affairs commissioner, said in a statement.
The money will come from the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund, which was established in 2016 to annually provide matching grants from the states corporate business tax for historic preservation projects.
Historic sites around the state applied for the grants for capital, historic site management and heritage tourism projects.
Before the funds can be dispersed, the recommendations are reviewed by the state Legislature for an appropriations bill, which must be signed by the governor.
In previous years, the recommended projects have been approved by the Legislature and signed by the governor before the end of the year or early the following year, said state Department of Community Affairs spokesperson Lisa Ryan.
Two special projects are included on this years list: $550,000 for a master plan for the Delaware and Raritan Canal and $99,789 for a survey of Civil Rights sites in Camden.
Both special projects meet the New Jersey Historic Trusts mission of advancing historic preservation in New Jersey in ways that save the states heritage and strengthen New Jersey communities, said Ryan.
The Delaware and Raritan Canal travels through four counties and its master plan could affect its bridges, tow paths and lock keepers houses, officials said.
The funding allocated for the survey of Camden will help identity sites associated with the Civil Rights Moment.
Camden is an area not well documented, especially in terms of historic resources and sites, Ryan said. This survey will increase understanding of the movement and hopefully lead to future preservation of these sites.
Also included in the list is funding thatll be dispersed in the next round of grants for four multiphase projects: Lambert Castle in Passaic County, Hoboken Public Library in Hudson County, East Trenton Library in Mercer County and the Seward House in Morris County.
Morris County received the most grants with a total of 11 projects. Union County was second with seven projects slated to get grants. Gloucester, Salem and Warren Counties did not have any sites included on this years list.
