Golden Globes returning to TV in 2023 after being dropped due to diversity row
The Golden Globes will be televised once again in 2023, after being held in private earlier this year following controversy over the diversity of the organising body’s membership.
Power Of The Dog, West Side Story and Succession were among the big 2022 winners, but they were announced without fanfare, the typically star-studded ceremony replaced by simple online updates after the show was dropped by its long-term US broadcaster NBC.
However, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which organises the event, has announced the Golden Globes will now return on NBC and its streaming service, Peacock.
A date has been set for Tuesday 10 January 2023, with the awards returning to the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
Details of who will host, following in the footsteps of the likes of Ricky Gervais, and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, have not yet been announced.
The HFPA recently added 103 new voters, marking the first time international-based voters have been added to the pool, it said.
The voting body is now represented by 62 different countries around the world.
“Combined with the current HFPA membership, the total Golden Globe Awards voting body is now 52% female, 51.5% racially and ethnically diverse, with 19.5% Latinx, 12% Asian, 10% Black and 10% Middle Eastern,” the organisation said.
Helen Hoehne, president of the HFPA, said in a statement: “We are thrilled to announce the return of the Golden Globe Awards on NBC and to host the ‘party of the year’ for audiences around the world who have been waiting for its return.
“It’s great to be back at the Beverly Hilton for the must-see celebration recognising the best in film and television.
“The HFPA remains committed to important changes and supporting programs that prioritize diversity, inclusion, and transparency.”
Frances Berwick, entertainment networks chairperson for NBCUniversal, said: “We recognise the HFPA’s commitment to ongoing change and look forward to welcoming back the Golden Globes to NBC for its landmark 80th anniversary in January 2023.”
The expose
The controversy followed a Los Angeles Times expose in 2021, which found the HFPA had no black members voting for the awards – and included allegations of inappropriate “freebies” influencing votes.
Actor Tom Cruise reportedly handed back the three awards he had won over the years, in protest.

With no famous attendees or even a live stream earlier this year, it meant there were no emotional or memorable acceptance speeches, no red carpet fashion, and no hosts.
Those who wanted to follow at home were only able to do so by keeping an eye on the Golden Globes website and social media channels.
Nominees for the 80th annual Golden Globes will be announced on 12 December ahead of the ceremony next year.
