Nathan Chasing Horse – who appeared in the Oscar-winning film Dances With Wolves – has been formally charged with sex trafficking, sexual assault and child abuse in Nevada.

Nathan Chasing Horse – who appeared in the Oscar-winning film Dances With Wolves – has been formally charged with sex trafficking, sexual assault and child abuse in Nevada.

The former Hollywood actor allegedly targeted indigenous girls, with Las Vegas police saying at least six victims had been identified.

One said she was allegedly being abused when she was 13 – and another claimed that she was offered to Chasing Horse as a “gift” when she was 15.

Following his appearance in Dances With Wolves, Chasing Horse gained a reputation among tribes across the United States and in Canada as a so-called medicine man who performed healing ceremonies.

From this position, police allege he would physically and sexually assault the girls, take underage wives and start a cult.

Chasing Horse is also accused of recording sexual assaults and arranging sex with the victims for other men who allegedly paid him.

The allegations date back to the early 2000s in multiple states, including Montana, South Dakota and Nevada, where he has lived for about a decade.

More on Nevada

Chasing Horse was arrested near his Las Vegas home after being at the centre of an investigation.

Police found guns, over 18kg of marijuana and magic mushrooms, and a memory card with multiple videos of sexual assaults, according to the arrest report.

He is also believed to be the leader of a cult known as The Circle, according to a 50-page search warrant, obtained by the AP news agency.

The warrant also said he was banished from the Fort Peck Reservation in Poplar, Montana, in 2015 following similar allegations.

Chasing Horse trained his wives to use firearms and told them to “shoot it out” if the police tried to “break their family apart”, according to the warrant.

Failing that, he told his wives to take “suicide pills”, the document alleges.

The 46-year-old actor is best known for his role as the young Sioux tribe member Smiles A Lot in the 1990 Kevin Costner film.

Chasing Horse was born on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, which is home to the Sicangu Sioux, one of the seven tribes of the Lakota nation.
