Transport, schools and tourist attractions – a list of the main closures due to Storm Eunice

A red weather warning has been issued for Storm Eunice, as it looks set to batter the UK with gusts of wind of up to 100mph.

The warning has been issued from 7am to 12pm on Friday in parts of the country and warns of “flying debris resulting in danger of life” and damage to buildings and homes”.

On Thursday morning, several parts of the country suffered power outages, some caused by Storm Dudley. The Northern Powergrid said 1,000 properties had no lights due to the weather

Below is a list of some of the things that will be affected by the weather on Friday:

Transport

  • All trains in Wales have been cancelled, with services suspended for the whole day. The disruption is likely to continue into the weekend, with more than 1,000 miles of track expected to be checked and cleared of debris
  • The only primary school on the Isles of Scilly will be closed on Friday after the Five Islands Academy was advised to shut down by the police
  • The Isles of Scilly Steamship Company said that, while flights have not been cancelled on Friday, there could be some disruption
  • There are no blanket cancellations on flights in the UK, but Gatwick Airport and East Midlands asked passengers to check the flight status with their airline
  • Avon and Somerset Police said it was likely that both the Severn crossings, the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and the M48 Severn Bridge, would be closed due to high winds
  • From 5am on Friday, the Dartford Crossing on the M25 will be closed
  • Orwell Bridge on the A14 in Suffolk will close from 4am
  • In South Wales, bus company Stagecoach said all services would be suspended on Friday morning until after 1.30pm
  • In the Republic of Ireland, Bus Eireann will not operate during the red warning. Irish Rail will operate provided there is no damage to tracks.

Schools

  • Many schools will be forced to close in Wales. In Cardiff, Ceredigion, Bridgend county, Swansea, Powys and Rhondda Cynon Taf councils have announced all schools will remain shut, while some schools in Newport will shut
  • Bristol City Council announced that all schools will close
  • In Somerset, all schools, colleges and other council services will be closed. All waste collections will be suspended with recycling centres and libraries closed. Mendip District Council has confirmed, “all schools, early years settings and colleges in Somerset will close tomorrow”.
  • Dozens of schools in Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham will be shut on Frida and schools in Anglesey, North Wales will also remain closed
  • Schools and colleges in several counties in the Republic of Ireland will be closed on Friday
  • Dozens of schools across Cornwall will be closing on Friday morning, while the county’s household waste recycling centres will shut

Attractions

  • The Prince of Wales has cancelled a planned visit to Newport and Swansea as a result of the forecast
  • The Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, west London and Wakehurst, West Sussex will be shut
  • Chester Zoo and Legoland in Windsor will be shut and anyone who was due to visit will be contacted to rebook
  • Windsor Great Park, Richmond, Bushy and Greenwich Parks, and National Trust sites including Polesden Lacey in Surrey will all be closed
  • The London Eye and River Cruise has said it will also be temporarily shutting
  • Cardiff Crown Court and Newport Crown Court will also be closed on Friday due to the weather
  • Warwick Castle will also be closed, due to the “high likelihood” of travel disruption and the “vast coverage” of trees throughout the attraction
  • Hampshire County Council has confirmed the closure of all the council-run country parks
  • Marwell Zoo near Winchester and Monkey World in Dorset will be shut
