Rabid fox forces closure of N.J. state park for 2nd day, officials say

Double Trouble State Park in Ocean County remained closed Tuesday as officials tried to remove a potentially rabid fox that has had encounters with visitors, state officials said.

The fox was behaving erratically, the state Department of Environmental Protection said in announcing that the park was off limits for a second straight day due to an abundance of caution.

New Jersey Fish and Wildlife is taking steps to address the situation, the DEP said in a statement published on the parks social media page.

A spokesman for the DEP declined to offer additional information on what the encounters with visitors entailed, saying additional information will be released as it becomes available.

On Monday, officials said the park, which is located in Lacey and Berkeley townships, would be temporarily closed so that sick wildlife can be trapped.
